For US companies
US team, offshore, or a Canadian studio?
If you are a US business deciding where to get your web, SEO, or software work done, here is the honest version of how the three options stack up on cost and friction.
| Comparison dimension | US team or agency | Offshore team | Canadian studio |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sticker price | Highest. US salaries and agency rates set the floor. | Lowest on paper. The hourly rate looks unbeatable. | Lower than US, before the exchange rate even kicks in. |
| Exchange rate | No currency advantage. US dollars at US prices. | A big nominal gap, often offset by oversight and rework. | Your US dollar buys about a third more, roughly 1.39 to 1 in mid 2026. |
| Time zone | Same as yours. | Eight to twelve hours off. You brief at night and wait a day. | Pacific time. Overlaps your entire work day. |
| Language and communication | Native English, no gap. | Varies. Briefs can get lost in translation, which means rework. | Native English. Nothing lost on a call. |
| Business and legal norms | Shared. Same contract and intellectual property rules. | A different legal system. Harder to enforce a contract or protect IP. | Shared norms, free trade under the current agreement, clean contracts. |
| Payroll and overhead | An employee adds 20 to 30 percent on top of salary. Agencies bake in retainer overhead. | Low direct cost, but you carry the management overhead. | Just the work. A foreign contractor, no US payroll, no benefits. |
| Who owns the result | An employee, or an account manager and a team you do not talk to. | You do, in practice. You become the project manager. | We do. One team, one point of contact, end to end. |
| Total cost once the dust settles | Predictable, but the highest. | The sticker savings shrink after management and rework. | Lower price, low friction, low rework. The savings actually stick. |
The honest take
None of these is wrong for everyone. If you need someone physically in your building, hire in the US. If the sticker rate is all that matters and you have the bandwidth to manage a team across a twelve hour gap, offshore can win on price. But if you want real savings without the friction, a Canadian studio is the sweet spot: outside US prices, inside US norms, on your clock. We make that case in more detail in why US companies save money hiring Canadian.

Common questions
- Is a Canadian studio cheaper than a US agency?
- Usually, and for two reasons that stack. The exchange rate means your US dollars buy about a third more in Canada, and hiring a studio instead of an employee or a retainer removes US payroll tax, benefits, and agency overhead. Same work, lower total cost.
- Is Canada nearshore or offshore for a US company?
- Think of it as same shore. We are on Pacific time, we speak native English, and we work under the same business and legal norms as you. You get the cost of going outside the US without the time zone and communication gaps of offshore.
- When does offshore still make sense?
- When the sticker rate is the only thing that matters and you have the bandwidth to manage a team across a large time gap, offshore can win on price. If you want real savings without becoming the project manager, a Canadian studio is the better trade.
